I feel fortunate to live in the DC area. Being natural isn't seen as a rarity. You almost blend in, depending on where you are. Instead of looking out of place, you feel like you're at home.
Today, as I was on a mission to find more of my favorite [body] moisturizer and then on the lookout for good glass containers for my sun tea, I noticed maybe 10 naturals in a 2o minute span. A natural mother with her two natural daughters, a father with HIS two natural daughters, an older woman rocking a defined twa, and then other ladies while actually out shopping. Most of the naturals were seen while waiting in line at Rita's(I needed an ice cream fix, lol).
At some point, it's going to be seen as normal and maybe straight hair will be in the minority. That would be interesting, wouldn't it? ;)

This is one of the reasons I love living in DC. I have been on the train a couple times after work and there were as many naturals as permies. I'm almost hesitant to move because I don't know what it feels like to be natural in a non-natural friendly city.
EXACTLY! While it hasn't always been this way, it's so refreshing to see now. Especially when you venture further into the city. And I too have been on the train, or waiting for one, and will see some beautiful natural-haired ladies. Then I find myself staring. LOL!
Then there are times where you meet eyes and then there's almost a confirmation smile or sorts shared between you to, like we're both saying, "Yeah...I see you." LOL!
Love your blog, KP! Living in Seattle for the past year reminds me of what I miss in my hometown DC, like appreciation for natural hair (and Rita's :) ). I got more stares here after completely cutting off my relaxed hair in November. Wearing an afro/braids/locs is not popular here. Now, I accept folks staring as looks of admiration. Being au naturale is easier and less expensive since my hair can take the rain and mist.
Thank you , JDDS! I've never been to Seattle, but didn't know it wasn't natural-hair friendly, but the good IS that your hair can take the rain and lingering mist. I've found I get the best curls with humidity and rain. In fact, I plan on getting one of those catchers and bottling it. No joke. I think there's something about the pH in rainwater. One day, I'll test my theory. ;)
